"Your Excellency the Secretary General, esteemed guests and honorable delegates, I now, officially, declare this year's THIMUN-Singapore Conference to be in-session."
This sentence marked the beginning of four days of intense lobbying, debating, amending and passing of resolutions for delegates from across the globe who attended this year's session of THIMUN-Singapore. For those of you who aren't familiar with the system, Model United Nations (MUN) offers a simulated version of the United Nations conferences for high school students who wish to actively participate in the discussion of pressing global affairs. It not only provides a professional working environment for its participants, but also enhances public speaking skills, ability to adapt to change, the tolerance of others and appreciation for our internationalism, forcing those who take part to step outside their comfort zones and always strive for the best possible outcomes.
However, if debating isn't your thing, MUN offers a variety of other opportunities such as the Press Team. This is comprised of the following positions: Editor-in-Chief; editor; reporter; photographer; cartoonist or publisher, all of whom work diligently throughout the conference putting together conference newspaper, documenting the successes of the assemblies.
If extensive amounts of deadline-conscious writing isn't your thing then you can always set your sights high on the executive positions such as chairs of committees or the Secretary General itself - but these require previous MUN experience.
All of these options were available to us during the THIMUN-Singapore conference, being one of the most prestigious in Asia and a sister to the MUN conference held annually in The Hague. No matter your role in the MUN spectrum, you're sure to have an excellent, albeit hard working, time and will leave wanting more.
